What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a long-term health condition that typically persists throughout a person’s life. Under normal conditions, the body converts sugar from foods like bread, fruits, and milk into the energy needed for daily life.
This process requires a hormone called insulin, produced by the pancreas (a gland located behind the stomach). Insulin acts like a “key,” allowing sugar to move from the blood into the cells to be used as fuel. In people with diabetes, the body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot use it effectively—a condition known as insulin resistance.
As a result, sugar builds up in the bloodstream instead of entering the cells, leading to high blood sugar, or “hyperglycemia.”
